Tamarisk

Installed on the foundation of a demolished jackrabbit hut in 29 Palms, the field of miniature salt-bearing trees is about self-defeating strategies of territorial dominance. Tamarisk was constructed through a combination of generative processes. The miniature trees are cut from paper, with unique forms determined algorithmically. The algorithmic process was designed to yield forms that resembled those of the desert smoke tree. They were then soaked in saline solution before being attached to a cracked concrete plane, itself encrusted in salt. The trees have a subtle salt coating that references the salt-producing Tamarisk species.

I showed Tamarisk as part of the Dry Immersion III: Desert Projects exhibition in 29 Palms.

Holiday Auto-Giffer

You already know how awesome animated gifs are. We feel pretty much the same way, so we made over 1800 of them during our holiday party with an automated photo-booth. Feast your eyes.

The auto-giffer was created using a combination of processing, python, and php. For all the details, watch the explanation video. Also be sure to check out the holiday website.

Blob Family Outing

The blob family goes out for a winter stroll. Each character and all animation is generated programmatically. The small blobs move around in a sort of two-dimensional flock and are all attracted to their favorite uncle.

The first blob was created for Lukas Vojir’s monster gallery. This family grew out of that initial study.

Transition

Transition, a short animation, was created using a system that overlays an audio spectrum onto a spatialized representation of cellular automata. The forms generated shift from one representation to the next, constantly inhabiting a state of change.

The software used to generate Transition was written in processing. I created the music for this video with a few tracks of classical guitar and a bent electronic toy.

Out of school, I wanted to continue experimenting with responsive projections. I was lucky to get the support of my employers after writing up a proposal for the Dumbo Arts Festival.

A photograph is turned into a cloud of colored dust that wants to settle at its origin. Disturbances push the dust away from its origins, and the trails of dust build up over time.

Monkey Town Visuals

My friend Zach Gage was making visuals for the band Ava Luna and invited me to make some sound-responsive animations for their show at Monkey Town. Shown here are the visuals I created as viewed from our perch during the show.

White Glove Flocking

Using the data from white glove tracking, I rendered the entire performance from the landmark television broadcast of Billy Jean in a single frame. Computer agents danced over the frame, with different degrees of tightness controlling how closely they followed Michael’s glove.

Drawing Machine

The drawing machine was created for the end-of-semester architecture open house. A physical pen is controlled by a video signal. When objects move near the pen’s virtual location, both the virtual and the real pen move to follow those objects. The result is a sympathetic flying pen that jitters and arcs across the canvas as it chases after everything it sees. The marks on the page are chaotic, but have an order imposed on them by the mechanical limitations of the machine.

Adam Michalak and Tom Heltzel collaborated in the conception and physical construction of the drawing machine.
