Dope Award for thingsiam.com

My portfolio site just won a ‘dope award’ in the ‘dynamic’ category. I’m pretty excited to have my work in a category with so many other excellent websites. Furthermore, the email those guys sent me was just so nice that I’ll be sure to send them more work for consideration in the future. Check out other cool stuff on the dope awards website. dope awards badge

thingsiam.com is shiny again

I took some time over the past few weeks to bring my portfolio site up to speed for the new year. Take a minute to check it out. A few new projects are in, and I revamped the interface to include way more fun. I enjoyed making it, and I hope you’ll enjoy looking at it.

The back-end is currently a flat XML file, but I’m working on getting a simple CMS built in Ruby/rails (the animation stuff is so much more fun). I successfully integrated a rails back-end with a flash interface for a project at work using RubyAMF (for some details on how to do that yourself, check Mark Llobrera’s tutorial), but I still find working with the mediatemple rails install a bit tricky. Once I figure everything out on my server side, I’ll likely do a log-type entry to describe the process.

Circuit Bending

bent electronics

I did some circuit bending with Nathan a month or so back. He brought the toys, and I brought the tools, and together we made a neat little mess of cheap electronics. The toy drum machine ended up auto-sequencing itself once you started a particular current by touching our added wire to any of the soldered terminals. I’m not exactly sure how we pulled that off, but it was pretty neat. If you run some sort of electronic label in Germany, give me a shout…

Los Angeles

venice beach pier

I’m currently in Los Angeles to hang out with some friends from school and meet with people in the Design|Media Arts program at UCLA. Had a good day today, meeting with Jacob Tonski, Justin Lui, Nova Jiang and Casey Reas. I’m excited about the growing collaboration between DMA and the architecture program. I’m staying with my friends from school, Tom and Jess, at their place in Venice.
